Selling the West
June 1, 2009
Obama said something rather dramatic to the BBC today as a preview to the Cairo speech:
The message I hope to bring is that democracy, the rule of law, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, those are not simply principles of the West to be hoisted on these countries, but rather what I believe to be universal principles to be embraced and affirmed as part of their national identity.
You could argue it’s the same thing as Bush wanting to spread democracy as a solution to the region’s problems.
But here’s where the right tone, salesmanship and positioning makes all the difference. Obama is saying these are your rights as much as they are ours, and it is up to you to fight for them.
